The one where I misread “sweet peas” as “snow peas”
I jumped through the long grass and wildflowers, playfully chasing butterflies and bees. My human, Evelyn, was nestled against her favorite tree, not too far from me, reading a book she’d picked up at the library yesterday.
I’ve been with her since she was coming out of the blobby baby stage. Snapdragons—the flowers—around these parts are known for protecting babies from evil spirits. On Evelyn’s first birthday, she was being presented with a new bouquet of snapdragons and Fairy Joelene sneezed mid-spell and the yellow and white flowers turned into, well, me. At first sight, she squealed with delight and Fairy Jolene didn’t have the heart to change me back into flowers.
To which, I’m gratefuk. While I am very much at home amongst our gardens and the wildflowers, I love my life with Evelyn.
“Ramsey!” she calls out.
I race a butterfly back to her headed in that same direction.
“Lunchtime,” Evelyn declares, tossing a couple of snow peas my direction—my favorite snack ever.
I curl up next to her, munching more snow peas as she starts talking about the book she’s reading. Evelyn, sunshine, and snow peas—does it get any better than this?
